Motorists Warned of Traffic Disruptions in Nairobi CBD

The National Police Service (NPS) has announced temporary traffic disruptions within the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) ahead of President William Ruto’s address on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
In a traffic advisory dated Thursday, April 9 2026, police said the disruptions are meant to facilitate two high-profile events taking place in proximity, the Africa Urban Forum at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) and the President’s address to the Nairobi County Assembly at City Hall.
“We wish to inform the public of temporary traffic disruptions within the Central Business District (CBD) today, Thursday, April 9, 2026,” read part of the notice.
NPS Announces Traffic Disruptions in Nairobi CBD Ahead of President Ruto’s Address
According to the NPS, due to a shared security perimeter around the venues, several key roads in the CBD will remain closed until the events conclude.
The affected roads include City Hall Way, sections of Wabera Street adjacent to City Hall, and the Supreme Court/Parliament roundabout.
Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys, use alternative routes, and strictly follow directions issued by traffic police officers deployed in the area. The NPS apologised for the inconvenience caused.
President William Ruto is expected to address the Nairobi County Assembly, where he will provide a comprehensive update on the implementation of the Ksh80 billion cooperation agreement signed in February between the national government and Nairobi City County.
Details of Cooperation Deal Between Nairobi County and National Government
On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja convened a joint coordination meeting comprising the Nairobi City County Assembly Speaker and assembly leadership, the County Commissioner and NGAO team, regional police command, government reception, and State House protocol ahead of Thursday’s presidential address to the people of Nairobi through the County Assembly.

The Sakaja–Ruto KSh 80 billion deal is a cooperation agreement signed on February 17, 2026, between the national government and Nairobi City County to address the capital’s long-standing urban challenges such as poor waste management, water shortages, and inadequate infrastructure.
The 24-month plan provides KSh 80 billion to fund key projects, including roads, drainage, street lighting, and water systems, through a joint implementation framework led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Governor Johnson Sakaja.
It is designed as a partnership to improve service delivery without taking over county functions.
