KRA Declares Commissioner General Position Vacant After Humphrey Wattanga’s Exit

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has officially declared the position of Commissioner General vacant following the exit of Humphrey Wattanga.

The tax agency has since advertised the top leadership role, inviting qualified candidates to apply for the position that oversees the country’s revenue collection operations.

In a job vacancy notice issued by the Authority on April 14, 2026, KRA announced that it is seeking a new Commissioner General who will serve as the Chief Executive Officer and Accounting Officer of the institution.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the Authority’s day-to-day operations, managing funds and property, and steering the organisation through its ongoing transformation agenda.

According to the notice, the Commissioner General will also play a key role in ensuring that the Authority achieves government revenue targets while maintaining compliance with tax and customs legislation.

Key Responsibilities of the Role

KRA outlined several responsibilities for the incoming Commissioner General, including providing strategic leadership to staff, fostering voluntary tax compliance, and promoting tax administration practices that support trade and business growth.

The successful candidate will also serve as the Authority’s chief spokesperson and ambassador on tax and customs matters at both regional and international levels.

Additionally, the role involves spearheading the Authority’s digital transformation initiatives and ensuring effective communication between management and the board.

Qualifications and Experience Required

Candidates interested in the position must be Kenyan citizens with at least a first degree from an accredited university and a master’s degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Law, or a related field.

Applicants are also required to have a minimum of 15 years of work experience, with at least 10 years served in senior leadership roles within large public or private institutions.

KRA further stated that knowledge of fiscal and tax policy and administration will be considered an added advantage.

Application Requirements and Deadline

Candidates interested in the above position must submit the following:

a. Application letter

b. Curriculum Vitae

c. Names, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three (3) Referees;

d. Certified copies of Certificates and National Identity Card;

e. Current and valid Tax Compliance Certificate from Kenya Revenue Authority;

f. Current and valid Clearance Certificate from Higher Education Loans Board;

g. Current and valid acknowledged application to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission;

h. Current and valid clearance certificate from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations; and

i. Current clearance from a recognized Credit Reference Bureau.

j. If you are a member of a professional body, you should be in good standing.

All applications must be addressed to the Chairman of the Kenya Revenue Authority Board at Times Tower in Nairobi or sent via email to the designated address.

“All applications must be received on or before 5th May, 2026,” the Authority stated in the vacancy notice.

Contract Terms and Equal Opportunity Commitment

KRA indicated that the successful candidate will be offered a three-year contract, renewable once based on performance, alongside an attractive and competitive remuneration package.

The Authority also emphasized its commitment to diversity and gender equality in recruitment.
