The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has officially initiated the procurement process for the dualling of the Kimwanga-Kimaeti-Malaba section of the A8 highway, a key transport corridor linking Bungoma and Busia counties.
In a notice released on Tuesday, April 14, the Authority invited qualified contractors to submit bids for the expansion of the 20-kilometre stretch, marking a significant step toward upgrading one of Western Kenya’s busiest road networks.
The project is part of broader efforts to strengthen the Northern Corridor, which connects the Port of Mombasa to the Malaba border crossing into Uganda.
This route plays a crucial role in facilitating trade between Kenya and neighbouring countries, including Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
KeNHA emphasized that the dualling works are intended to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance road safety along the busy highway.
In its statement, KeNHA confirmed the opening of the bidding process.
“The Authority hereby invites bids from eligible contractors for the dualling of the Kimwanga-Kimaeti-Malaba Section of A8 Road tender, to be funded through the Development Votes.”

The project will be financed through development allocations, reflecting government commitment to improving transport infrastructure in the region.
Once completed, the upgraded road is expected to significantly boost economic activity in Western Kenya by easing the movement of goods and passengers.
The corridor is a vital export route for goods heading to Uganda and beyond.
The improved infrastructure is also expected to stimulate investment and support local businesses in Bungoma and Busia counties.
According to official records, the project received an initial allocation of Ksh 15 million in the 2024 budget cycle, with an additional Ksh 13.6 million later injected to support its development.
KeNHA has scheduled a compulsory pre-tender site visit for interested bidders on Tuesday, April 28 at 10:00 a.m.
Contractors are required to assemble at Kimwanga Trading Centre as part of the bidding requirements.
Attendance at this site visit is mandatory for firms wishing to participate in the tender process.

Interested bidders can obtain tender documents through the KeNHA official website, the Public Procurement Information Portal, or directly from KeNHA offices upon payment of a non-refundable fee of Ksh 1,000.
The Authority has also advised applicants to regularly check its website for any updates or clarifications regarding the tender.
The Kimwanga-Malaba project is part of a larger national infrastructure push along the Northern Corridor.
Other ongoing works include the dualling of the 175-kilometre Rironi-Mau Summit section along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, which is expected to be completed by June 2027.
