KeNHA Rolls Out New Technology to Safeguard Roads from Climate Change

Share

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is adopting new technology to strengthen roads against the growing effects of climate change.

In a statement dated Thursday, April 16, 2026, KeNHA said it is improving its road design approach by introducing advanced geosynthetic systems to make slopes stronger, last longer, and better protect the environment.

The Authority said the move aims to keep highways stable and safe despite challenges such as heavy rains and soil erosion, which often damage roads.

“To address increasing climate pressures, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is enhancing its design approach by integrating advanced geosynthetic systems to improve slope stability, durability, and environmental protection,” read part of the notice.

As part of this effort, KeNHA, with support from Officine Maccaferri S.p.A., a prominent Italian multinational corporation specialising in civil engineering and environmental construction solutions, held a technical workshop to explore modern solutions for slope protection.

The workshop brought together experts to share knowledge on the use of geosynthetic materials, which help stabilise soil and reduce the risk of landslides along highways.

KeNHA said the ideas discussed during the workshop will guide future road projects and help the agency adopt smarter and more durable construction methods across the national road network.

The Authority noted that the move is part of its wider plan to promote sustainability, innovation, and improved service delivery in the country’s infrastructure sector.

Officine Maccaferri mainly focuses on designing and supplying systems that improve the stability, safety, and sustainability of infrastructure.

One of its most recognised contributions is the development and use of gabions, wire mesh cages filled with stones, which are widely used in erosion control, riverbank protection, and retaining structures. These solutions are particularly valuable in regions prone to flooding, landslides, or soil instability, where conventional construction methods may be too costly or less effective.

The company plays a critical role in transportation infrastructure by supporting the construction of roads, railways, and bridges.
