NILA Baby Shop: From Ksh 14,000 Gikomba Start to a Multi-Million Business Empire

Share

NILA Baby Shop has grown from a small Gikomba market hustle into a fast-rising baby wear retail brand in Kenya, now operating across major towns including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Meru, and Nakuru.

Founded in 2018 by Norah Muendo and her husband, Stephen Sila Ngumbi, whom she calls “The Captain” and credits for believing in her vision at the very beginning.

“In 2018, you generously gave me Ksh 14,000 and told me to go and see what I can do,” Norah reflected.

With that support, she moved to Gikomba Market and began sourcing baby clothes such as cotton rompers and onesies for resale. That first step set the foundation for what would later become a structured retail brand.

As sales grew, she reinvested her profits and expanded from informal trading into physical retail outlets that now serve customers across Kenya.

From Gikomba Stall to Structured Business Growth

After the initial start, NILA Baby Shop gradually built a stable retail system. Instead of remaining in informal trade, Norah expanded operations and opened stores in key towns, strengthening both physical presence and customer access.

The business has since expanded its footprint through strategically located branches, with Nairobi serving as the headquarters in Utawala (Eastern Bypass, Astrol) and another outlet in the CBD at I&M Building. Other branches operate across key towns in Kenya, including:

  • Mombasa (Pembe za Ndovu, CBD)
  • Kisumu (Mega Plaza, Ground Floor)
  • Eldoret (New Northrift stage, CBD)
  • Meru (Greenwood City Mall)
  • Nakuru (Kenyatta Avenue, near Westside Mall)

As a result, the brand now serves customers both in-store and online, strengthening its reach across the country.

Online Visibility and Public Attention

As the business expands, it has also gained strong online visibility. A post shared by Eng. John Macharia on X highlights Norah’s discipline, consistency, and rapid growth in the retail space.

He notes her constant engagement with customers online and her early working routine, which reportedly begins around 4 a.m., often before her employees arrive.

“I have never seen a hardworking lady in Kenya like Nila Baby Shop owner Norah Muendo,” he wrote.

“Her Facebook page is updated every 30 minutes. Her TikTok page is always active,” he highlighted her consistency.

Together, these remarks reflect a brand that continues to grow through visibility, discipline, and strong customer engagement.

Products, Quality, and Customer Experience

Beyond expansion, NILA Baby Shop focuses on baby and mother care products, including newborn clothing, maternity wear, nursing wear, and accessories for children aged 0–18 years.

The brand prioritizes comfort, affordability, and quality while working with designers and sourcing teams to maintain product variety and competitive pricing.

At the same time, the company strengthens quality control through supplier checks and third-party testing. This approach ensures that products meet safety and production standards.

Moreover, the brand designs its stores to enhance customer experience. The outlets offer a warm, family-friendly environment that helps mothers and children shop comfortably as they explore different product categories.

Partnership Behind the Growth

Behind the expansion, Norah credits her husband for playing a key role in the foundation of the business. He provided the initial capital and continues to remain part of the business journey as it grows.

“I made one promise to you, NEVER TO LET YOU DOWN,” she told her husband.

“CAPTAIN, Receive your flowers! You are incredible!” she added, acknowledging her husband.

From a KSh 14,000 start in Gikomba to a growing retail chain across Kenya, NILA Baby Shop shows how consistency, partnership, and strong brand visibility can transform a small hustle into a nationwide business with lasting impact.
