Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rains and Floods in Nairobi and Other Counties for the Next One Week

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has warned of heavy rainfall, strong winds and large waves.

In it’s update on April 24, Kenya Met said the rainfall exceeding 20mm within 24 hours is expected over parts of the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya between 24th and 30th April 2026.

The heaviest rainfall over these regions is likely to be received from Sunday 26th to Tuesday 28th April 2026.

The Coast is likely to continue experiencing heavy rainfall of more than 20mm in 24 hours up to 27th April 2026.

Strong southerly to southeasterly winds with speeds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s) are expected over the Coast, the Southeastern Lowlands, Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.

Large ocean waves with heights of more than 2 meters are likely to occur in coastal waters.

Kenya Met Lists Areas of Concern
  • Northwestern

Turkana and Samburu.

  • Western Region and the Lake Victoria Basin
These regions include Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho, Bomet and Narok.
  • Central Highlands including Nairobi

Others include Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi and Meru

  • Southeastern Lowlands

Consists of of Kajiado county

  • Coastal Region

Countries in this region include Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu.

  • Northeastern Region

This includes Garissa and parts of Marsabit, Isiolo, Wajir, Mandera, Taita-Taveta, Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni.

Instructions

 

Residents in all the mentioned areas should remain vigilant for potential floods, flash floods, and poor visibility.

Note that flood waters may occur in areas where it has not rained heavily, particularly downstream.

To ensure safety, Kenya Met has advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees or near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.

“Exercise caution while engaging in any maritime activities. People in landslide prone areas especially over the slopes of the Aberdare ranges, Mt. Kenya and other hilly areas should be vigilant. Updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes,” Kenya Met said.
