General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has sparked fresh debate about succession politics in Uganda after suggesting that he and other children of President Yoweri Museveni could soon assume leadership roles in the country.
His remarks came just days after President Museveni shared a lengthy birthday message celebrating his son’s 52nd birthday and reflecting on their family’s role in Uganda’s political history.
In a message addressed to Ugandans and Africans, President Yoweri Museveni thanked God for his family and praised his children for their contributions to the country and the ruling movement.
He paid special tribute to General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, crediting him with improving discipline within the military.
“On this occasion, on the 24th of April 2026, I want to congratulate Gen. Muhoozi (Muogi) on this 52nd birthday,” Museveni said.
“Gen. Muhoozi has made significant contribution to fighting corruption in the Army and increasing the lethality of the UPDF,”he added.

The Ugandan leader also reflected on the upbringing of his children, describing how they were born during the liberation struggle and raised within the resistance movement.
“These children, in particular Muhoozi, were born in the resistance, grew up in the resistance, and, in various ways, have made significant contribution to the resistance,” he added.
Shortly after the birthday tribute, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba posted a statement widely interpreted as a signal of political ambition.
In the message shared online, he suggested that the next generation of leadership from President Museveni’s family could soon take charge of the country.
“The time for jokes in Uganda is soon coming to an end. We the children of the great leader, Mzee, will soon be in charge and we cannot stand corruption and inefficiency!” Muhoozi stated.
The remarks quickly drew attention across social media and political circles, with the public interpreting them as a possible indication of succession planning.
