Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rainfall and Landslides in Late April

Share

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall and an increased risk of landslides in various regions of the country as April 2026 comes to an end.

In its seven-day forecast covering April 28 and May 4, 2026, Kenya Met said rains are expected to persist across multiple regions, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, the Coast, and Northeastern Kenya.

The agency noted that some areas are likely to experience heavy rainfall, raising the risk of flooding and related hazards.

The weatherman cautioned that the ongoing rains could trigger flooding and flash floods, reduce visibility for motorists, and lead to rising river levels, even in areas not directly receiving heavy rainfall.

There is also an increased risk of landslides in hilly areas such as the Aberdare Ranges, Mount Kenya, and surrounding regions.

Residents have been advised to avoid walking or driving through moving water, refrain from sheltering under trees or near grilled windows during storms, and exercise caution in landslide-prone and low-lying areas.

At the same time, daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are expected in the Coast, the Southeastern lowlands, Northeastern, and Northwestern Kenya.

Night-time temperatures are likely to drop below 10°C in parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, and areas near Mount Kilimanjaro.
