Kenyan Officer Benedict Kabiru Missing as Haiti Mission Wraps Up

Share

The last batch of Kenyan police officers returned home from Haiti on Tuesday, April 28, with the last contingent of 150 officers touching down in Nairobi as the country’s participation in the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission concludes.

The officers landed in the capital from Port-au-Prince with their homecoming accompanied by Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, and Deputy IG Eliud Lagat, who had earlier met with UN officials and commanders to commemorate the completion of the Kenyan deployment.

The departure marks the end of a risky mission to pacify a Caribbean nation where heavily armed gangs have brought anarchy to significant areas.

However, amidst the reunion with families, apprehension remains the order of the day for relatives of one officer who has not returned.

Family Demands Truth as Missing Officer’s Hope Fades with Each Returning Contingent

Police Constable Benedict Kabiru Kuria was reported missing on March 25, 2025, following an attack by armed gangs in Haiti’s Artibonite Department, and since then, he has not been seen.

The family stated that the returning group brought them hope that he would be part of it, but this hope has not been met repeatedly.

“We just want the truth. We have waited long enough,” stated his brother Philip Kamau.

The family has accused authorities of not being able to provide consistent information, raising conflicting signals from Kenya, and a condolences message from Haitian officials added more fuel to their concern.

The family moved to court, listing senior government officials as respondents in a bid to compel the state to provide clear details.

Director of Police Operations Ranson Lolmodoni dismissed claims about Kabiru’s death, terming them as social media speculation.

Meanwhile, as Kenya exits the mission, questions have emerged over allegations that some MSS officers perpetrated sexual abuse, allegations that Kenyans have denied.

Addressing the United Nations Security Council, Kenya’s envoy Erastus Lokaale insisted that an internal investigation had cleared the MSS team, citing discipline and adherence to orders during the mission.
