South African politician and President of the Economic Freedom Fighters [EFF] party, Julius Malema, has sent Ngizwe Mchunu an urgent legal demand regarding statements he made during a recent interview that were widely spread on social media and alleged to be defamatory.

In a statement on April 29, 2026, Malema’s lawyers said Mchunu should issue a public apology and withdraw his comments, as well as pay R1 million (Ksh 7788508.00) in damages within 24 hours.

Malema’s lawyers claim Mchunu accused him of taking R60 million (Ksh 467,310,480) in drug money from a Nigerian drug dealer and protecting undocumented immigrants in return for political votes.

It stated the remarks were untrue, malicious, and damaging to the standing and reputation of Mr. Malema as a Member of Parliament and the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters.

The legal demand continued to say that the remarks made during an April 28 interview have had a detrimental impact on Malema’s reputation.

He stated, arguing that Mchunu presented allegations as facts, and in doing so, it led the public to believe that what he was saying about the EFF leader was fact.
