Prices of several essential commodities increased in April 2026, with both food items and transport costs pushing household spending higher.
The latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows notable changes when compared to March 2026 prices.
To begin with, tomatoes recorded the sharpest increase, rising from Ksh 99.60 in March to Ksh 108.60 in April, a 9.0 percent jump.
Similarly, Irish potatoes increased from Ksh 107.16 to Ksh 110.16, while kale (sukuma wiki) rose from Ksh 104.34 to Ksh 106.86.
At the same time, spinach edged up from Ksh 111.58 to Ksh 115.16, while maize flour (sifted) increased from Ksh 155.76 to Ksh 158.06.
In addition, maize grain (loose) rose from Ksh 70.44 to Ksh 71.30, reinforcing pressure on staple food costs.
These increases highlight how vegetables and basic food commodities continued to drive food price movements in April.
However, the April data also shows shifts from March trends, with some commodities declining.
For instance, cabbages dropped from Ksh 71.52 in March to Ksh 69.15 in April. Similarly, oranges decreased from Ksh 123.57 to Ksh 121.28.
Consequently, the data reflect a mixed pricing environment where increases in key items offset declines in others.
Beyond food, transport, and fuel costs increased significantly, adding pressure on consumers.
At the same time, matatu fares increased across major routes, including Kisumu to Nairobi, Karen to CBD and Narok town boda boda transport.

Annual consumer price inflation rose between April 2025 and April 2026.
According to KNBS, the annual consumer price inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 5.6 per cent in April 2026.
This means the general price level increased by 5.6 per cent compared to April 2025, reflecting a faster rise in the cost of living.
The increase was mainly driven by transport, food, and housing-related costs, which continue to dominate household spending pressures despite a few price declines in selected commodities.
