Teachers to Access IVF Services Under New SHA Mwalimu Programme

Share

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has introduced In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) services under the Social Health Authority (SHA) Mwalimu Comprehensive Cover, expanding access to reproductive healthcare for eligible members and their spouses.

The service now operates at The Nairobi West Hospital, effective April 24, 2026. TSC set strict conditions for access to the new benefit.

“Access to IVF services is strictly reserved for SHA-POMSF (Mwalimu Comprehensive Cover) beneficiaries only,” the announcement stated.

This means only principal members and their legally registered spouses qualify for treatment. To qualify, members must present clinical evidence of infertility.

“You must have a documented failure to conceive after twelve (12) months of regular unprotected intercourse, or as clinically determined by a qualified specialist,” the statement said.

In addition, a registered specialist must confirm the diagnosis and recommend treatment.

Age Limit for Female Applicants

The programme also introduces an age restriction for female partners. TSC applies this condition to guide treatment eligibility and improve success rates.

“The female partner must be aged forty-one (41) years or below at the start of the treatment cycle,” the announcement stated.

The IVF benefit falls under the existing inpatient cover limit. It includes frozen embryo transfer cycles and covers costs even when a cycle fails or gets cancelled. However, beneficiaries remain limited to two lifetime IVF attempts.

In addition, SHA requires pre-authorization for all procedures. Only accredited facilities under the scheme, including Nairobi West Hospital, will offer the services.

SHA Recognizes Infertility as a Medical Condition

“SHA recognizes infertility as a medically recognized condition with significant physical, emotional, and social effects,” it stated, emphasizing the medical importance of the programme.

The authority aims to support affected families through structured and regulated care.

Rollout to Improve Access to Fertility Care

Overall, the rollout expands access to assisted reproductive services for eligible teachers. As a result, affected couples will now seek treatment under a regulated and covered system, offering renewed hope for families facing infertility challenges.
