Uganda Election

Museveni began his 2026 re-election journey after Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) endorsed him as its presidential candidate for another term. His campaign focused on economic growth, security, infrastructure, and pushing Uganda toward what he called “high middle-income status.”

Uganda held its general election in January 2026.

Museveni faced several challengers, including opposition leader Bobi Wine.

The election period was tense, with opposition groups alleging intimidation, internet shutdowns, and voting irregularities. International observers and rights groups also raised concerns about the electoral process.

Victory and Swearing-in

When the results were announced, Uganda’s Electoral Commission declared Museveni the winner with 71.65% of the vote, securing a seventh elective term in office.

After the victory announcement, Museveni officially received his declaration forms and promised to focus on poverty eradication, unity, and economic transformation during his new term.

Opposition leaders challenged the results, and legal petitions were filed in court. However, Uganda’s Supreme Court later cleared the way for Museveni’s inauguration after a presidential election petition was withdrawn.

Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony then began across Uganda.

The government announced that Museveni would take the oath of office on May 12, 2026, at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds under the theme “Protecting the Gains, Making a Qualitative Leap into High Middle-Income Status.”

The Ugandan government declared May 12 a public holiday, while organizers confirmed attendance by dozens of foreign delegations and heads of state from across Africa and beyond.

Museveni’s swearing-in marked the beginning of another five-year term, extending his rule of Uganda, which began in 1986, to more than four decades in power.
