Ruto Responds After Gachagua Mistakenly Said UDA Will Win Ol Kalou By-Election

Share

A day after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua mistakenly said that the UDA Party would win the Ol Kalou by-election, President William Ruto came out in full support of the party’s candidate, Samuel Muchina Nyagah, officially endorsing him on July 13, 2026.

In a post on X, Ruto congratulated Nyagah on winning the UDA ticket for the Olkalou Constituency by-election slated for July 16, 2026.

“Congratulations, Samuel Muchina Nyagah, on your nomination to carry the UDA flag in the Ol Kalou Constituency by-election slated for July 16th, 2026,” the Head of State wrote. He further lauded the other nine aspirants who competed for the nomination, stating that they “sought the opportunity to fly our party’s flag.”

Gachagua’s Shifting Statements on Olkalou MP Nomination

The President’s statement came hours after Gachagua addressed a massive crowd of supporters for the Day of the Countryside (DCP) rally at Kasarani and later at Olkalou on Friday.

Speaking in Kiswahili, Gachagua was quoted as saying: “Na yule atapita kwa UDA is the next member of parliament for Kalao.”

However, only minutes later, the former Deputy President backtracked on his earlier statement, saying that whoever the DCP declares as the winner of its nomination will be the party’s candidate for the Ol Kalou parliamentary seat.

The exercise recorded a high turnout, with more than 20,000 party members participating—more than double the turnout recorded during the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nominations in the constituency on Friday.
