KWS Issues Alert After Hyena Was Spotted Chasing School Bus in Syokimau

Residents of Syokimau and nearby areas have been urged to stay alert after a hyena was reportedly spotted along Mwananchi Road off Eastport Drive on Sunday, May 11, 2026.
In a public notice dated May 12,2026, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said its response teams are actively monitoring the situation following reports from residents.
How the Hyena Sighting Happened
The incident first came to public attention after a woman driving along a community road in Syokimau reportedly spotted the wild animal and recorded a video.
In the clip, the visibly shocked woman is heard saying, “Hii ni hyena, ayayaya, that’s a hyena, isipate watoto,” expressing fear that the animal could harm children nearby.
A school bus can also be seen moving along the road in the video, suggesting that pupils or students were being picked up or dropped off at the time of the sighting.
The video quickly spread online, raising concern among residents in the area.

KWS Confirms Fresh Footprints
According to KWS, the Problem Animal Control (PAC) team did not directly spot the animal during the operation.
However, officers found fresh footprints, confirming that the hyena had recently moved through the area.
“Although the animal was not directly sighted by the Problem Animal Control (PAC) team, fresh footprints confirmed its recent movement,” KWS said in the statement.
The agency added that surveillance and monitoring efforts have now been intensified.
Hyena Believed to Be Moving Towards Katani
KWS said early indications show the animal may be moving through bushy and isolated land behind Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) towards Katani.
The wildlife agency assured residents that officers are closely tracking the animal to ensure public safety.
“Surveillance and monitoring have been intensified, with indications that the animal is moving through bushy isolated land behind JKIA towards Katani,” the statement added.

Residents Asked to Stay Vigilant
KWS urged residents not to panic but advised them to take precautionary measures while the operation continues.
- Avoid approaching or provoking the animal
- Keep children and pets indoors
- Report any sightings immediately to KWS or local authorities
“Precautionary measures are being taken and there is no cause for panic,” KWS stated.
