The National Cohesion and Integration Commission condemned the violent assault of Ms. Rachel Wandeto in Kasarani and warned that political intolerance is destroying national cohesion.
In a statement released on May 18, 2026, the NCIC said the attack took place on May 16, 2026, in Kasarani Sub-County of Nairobi County.
“The National Cohesion and Integration Commission unreservedly condemns the vicious physical assault on Ms Rachel Wandeto,” the commission declared.
The commission also referred to articles 28, 29(c), 33(1) and 38(1) of the Kenyan constitution.
Article 28 defends human dignity, while Article 29(c) defends liberty and security of persons and forbids all forms of violence from whatsoever source.
Article 33(1) defends the right of persons and groups to freedom of expression, while Article 38(1) ensures a citizen has the right to form, join, and campaign for a political party of their choice, or any political cause.
NCIC argued that Ms Wandeto’s attack violated all of the above-mentioned articles of the constitution and “this was a crime not against one woman, but against the entire constitution that guarantees Kenyan citizens the right to express themselves freely while participating in national politics.”

Section 13(1) makes it an offence to use threatening or abusive words, and section 62(1) specifies it’s an offence to incite or cause public disorder, and section 25(1) criminalises contempt and ethnic or racial intimidation.

“Ms. Muthoni’s assault falls within the type of conduct the Commission is established to address,” stated the commission.
The commission further issued a warning to any leader that, if found guilty of instigating violence, NCIC will deal with them using full powers granted under its statute.
“No woman or any Kenyan should be subjected to any form of violence or life lost for holding a political position or opinion,” stated NCIC.
