Nyeri Polytechnic Closed With Immediate Effect

Nyeri Polytechnic has been closed indefinitely due to the unruly acts that followed the disputed students’ elections and claims of mismanagement at the institution.

This has happened following incidents of chaos that broke out on the institution’s premises after the students demonstrated to the extent of clashing with the police who had come to maintain order.

The disturbances were said to have begun following tensions that arose over the process of student elections, which saw factions of students claiming that the administration was interfering and being non-transparent in the election process.

Demonstrators later spilled onto nearby roads where they barricaded sections using stones and tree figs.

The protests intensified as anti-riot police officers moved in to disperse the crowds.

Officers lobbed teargas canisters to disperse the protesters while groups of students responded by hurling stones and chanting slogans condemning the institution’s management.

Campus Closure Amid Escalating Tensions

Students who were in the institution premises were asked to vacate the institution, while the security forces increased patrols in order to avoid further damage from the unrest.

There were also effects on businesses located in the area, where some traders closed their shops out of fear of vandalization and insecurity due to the unrest period.

Police Move to Restore Order

Police officers struggled for several hours to disperse the crowds as students repeatedly regrouped along major access roads near the institution.

Clouds of teargas engulfed sections of the area during the confrontation, forcing nearby residents and traders to seek shelter while transport operations experienced delays.

The closure of the institution is expected to disrupt academic activities indefinitely as education officials assess the security situation and possible damage caused during the unrest.

Parents and guardians were advised to assist in ensuring that their children exit the learning institution immediately as investigations into the source of the mayhem are ongoing.
