Tonui previously served as the Director of Operations in the Kenya Police Service and now takes charge of the elite paramilitary unit responsible for handling high-risk security operations across the country.

He also served as the Director of Wildlife Security at the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). In that role, he regularly led multi-agency operations and chaired the National Organising Committee for Uniformed Disciplined Services.

Earlier in his career, he served as the County Police Commander for both Mandera and Kitui counties. During his tenure in Mandera, he spearheaded regional election security training and local safety registration campaigns.

Roles of GSU Commandant

The reshuffle also saw Fredrick Egesa Nyongesa, OGW, AIG, appointed as the Deputy Commandant of the GSU.

Meanwhile, Paul Maingo Mumo, MBS, AIG, has been moved from the Directorate of Quality Assurance to become the Director of the Internal Affairs Unit.

The transfer letter, addressed to Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, said the National Police Service Board had approved the changes and that they would take effect immediately.

As GSU Commandant, Tonui will be responsible for providing overall leadership and command of the elite unit, including overseeing its operations, training, administration, and deployment across the country.

The GSU plays a key role in maintaining internal security, responding to riots and civil disturbances, combating terrorism, banditry and cattle rustling, protecting the President and State Houses, safeguarding strategic installations, and supporting other security agencies during major operations.

He will also oversee the training and readiness of thousands of GSU officers, including the specialised Recce Squad.
