Edgar Odongo’s Final Night: The Mysterious Death of Yale Graduate That Never Got Answers

The death of Edgar Odongo, a Kenyan scholar whose academic excellence earned him international recognition, continues to stir grief and unanswered questions almost five years after his death.
Odongo, who graduated with the highest academic distinction from Yale University in the United States, died on August 11, 2021, at the age of 26 after injuries sustained under circumstances that remain a subject of public interest.
On the evening of August 10, 2021, Odongo left his family’s home in Sofia Estate, Homa Bay County, at around 7:30 p.m. after informing relatives that he was going to meet his friends.
According to his family, he later spoke to his brother by phone at approximately 9:47 p.m. and indicated that he was nearby and expected to return home before the 10 p.m. curfew.

Hours later, his phone became unreachable, and he was not at home by then.
At around 3:14 a.m. on August 11, a friend travelling along the Homa Bay-Mbita Road reportedly found Odongo lying by the roadside and was seriously injured but still conscious.

He was rushed to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital before being transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu due to the severity of his injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Odongo died later that night because of the injuries that he had.
Medical Assessments
Medical assessments indicated that his injuries were consistent with a road traffic accident, possibly a hit and run involving a speeding vehicle.
However, questions emerged over the circumstances surrounding his final movements and how he ended up several kilometres from where he had last communicated with family members.
Odongo was born in Homa Bay with roots in Migori County and he was widely regarded as one of Kenya’s brightest young minds.
He scored 440 marks in the 2008 KCPE examination while at St. Peter’s Cape View Academy and he later earned an A plain in the 2012 KCSE examinations at Maseno School.
Education
He proceeded to Yale University, where he studied Electrical Engineering and graduated in 2019. Odongo later worked as a Postgraduate Associate, contributing to conservation technology and artificial intelligence research.

He was buried on August 20, 2021, in Kitere Village, Migori County.
His legacy continues to inspire many young Kenyans pursuing academic excellence.
