Old Mutual Appoints Former Rwanda Central Bank Governor John Rwangombwa to Board

Old Mutual Holdings Plc has appointed veteran African economist and former central bank governor John Rwangombwa to its board as an independent non-executive director effective on June 1, 2026.
In a notice on June 12, Old Mutual said the move aims to strengthen governance while deepening expertise in macroeconomic policy, financial regulation, and long-term strategy.
“The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. John Rwangombwa as an independent non-executive director of the Company, with effect from 1 June 2026,” the company announced.
Old Mutual Holdings said that the decision reflects its strategy to reinforce leadership capacity with seasoned professionals drawn from key financial and policy institutions across Africa.
It added that Rwangombwa brings extensive experience in central banking, fiscal management, and institutional reform, which will support Old Mutual’s board during a period of shifting financial sector dynamics.

Old Mutual Strengthens Board with Central Banking Expertise
Rwangombwa joins the Old Mutual board with more than 30 years of public sector experience, and he has built a strong record in economic policy leadership across Africa.
He served as Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda from 2013 to 2025, where he led reforms that strengthened monetary policy frameworks, improved regulatory oversight, and enhanced financial sector resilience.
Before that, he worked as Rwanda’s Minister of Finance and Economic Planning and drove major reforms in public financial management while also supporting capital market development.
Education and International Recognition of John Rwangombwa
Rwangombwa holds a Master of Business Administration in Public Administration from Maastricht School of Management and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from Makerere University.
Over the years, he has also earned several regional accolades, including Sub-Saharan Africa Central Bank Governor of the Year and AFIS African Governor of the Year.
Beyond national roles, Rwangombwa has also shaped regional financial policy through leadership positions, including Chair of the Association of African Central Banks and membership in the IMF Board of Governors, where he contributed to efforts aimed at strengthening macroeconomic stability across African economies.

Board Cnfidence in Old Mutual Strategy
The company expressed confidence that his appointment will enhance board deliberations and strengthen strategic decision-making as Old Mutual continues to expand its presence in key financial markets.
It also expects his experience to support long-term goals tied to stability, governance, and sustainable growth.
“The Board congratulates and warmly welcomes Mr. John Rwangombwa and looks forward to his valuable contribution to the Company,” the company stated.
