Ugandan Chief of Defense Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sparked political discussion after showing interest in succeeding his father, President Yoweri Museveni.

Muhoozi, the son of President Museveni, referred to himself as “the 10th President of Uganda” in a series of public remarks.

In his statements, Muhoozi asked Ugandans whether they would support him if he chose to run for office after his father.

“Do you Ugandans love me? Will you vote for me if I stand after Mzee?” he stated.

He later expressed appreciation to the people, adding that he would follow in his father’s footsteps.

“Thank you for your support. I will definitely follow my great father, Mzee, in the big chair!” he stated.

The remarks come after earlier reports in which Muhoozi publicly indicated his intention to run for the presidency in 2026.

In a post shared on social media in March 2023, he stated that he would contest for the presidency, marking the first time he gave a clear timeline for his political ambitions.

“You have wanted me to say it forever! Okay, in the name of Jesus Christ my God, in the name of all the young people of Uganda and the world, and in the name of our great revolution, I will stand for the Presidency in 2026,” he wrote.

However, his statements drew attention both in Uganda and beyond, as he is widely seen as a potential successor to President Museveni, who has ruled Uganda for decades.

In Uganda, opposition leaders accused Museveni of grooming his son for succession, allegations the president has denied.

Muhoozi, a senior officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) and former presidential adviser, is known for his controversial and often politically charged social media posts.

In other past remarks, he has also expressed frustration over what he views as a delayed leadership transition, comparing Uganda’s situation with that of younger leaders in other countries.

Public Support for Museveni’s Succession

Most members of the public have stated that they are ready to support Muhoozi, citing the general’s major successful operations that have benefited Ugandans.

Further, some of his supporters have urged the General to ensure that reforms are made to the justice system once in office.

In addition, supporters have called on Muhoozi to ensure that, during his reign, he fights corruption in the country, citing the current president, Yoweri Museveni, as having failed to deal with it to the country’s satisfaction.

Despite strong support, some members of the public have affirmed that they do not support Muhoozi’s succession to Museveni, adding that his leadership is not desirable.
