Share

Opoda Farm is Raila Odinga’s ancestral land located in the Bondo area, Siaya County.

It is the place where the remains of the late Raila will be laid to rest on Sunday of October 19, 2025.

A busy public road across the farm divides it into two sections, where the former Prime Minister occasionally meets locals fetching water from the farm.

Slain Odinga has been vocal in championing eco-friendly living; therefore, he harvested all the rainwater collected on his vast farm.

Many prominent figures across the country possess at least two homes, that is city estate and a rural home.

The farm has dairy cattle, indigenous cattle, sheep, and goats.

It is not only a residential place but also regarded as a place where Raila recharged his energy, enjoyed private moments with family, and hosted VIP guests.

Former Prime Minister has hosted high-profile visitors in his farm, like the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Olusegun Obasanjo, the former Nigerian president.

Odinga has been captured through photos showing him participating in ploughing his farm with a tractor, wearing gumboots, shorts, and sometimes with a jembe in his hands.

What Family Alleges Raila Requested Before His Death

According to the family, Odinga penned down in his will that he wished to be buried within 72 hours of his demise.

“It was the wish of the late Prime Minister that he be buried within the shortest time possible,” Dr Oburu said.

The government complied with this request and organized a four-day State funeral programme designed to honour Odinga, widely regarded as one of the country’s most enduring political figures.

DP Kithure Kindiki is co-heading the funeral arrangement committee with Odinga’s elder brother, Senator Oburu Oginga.

“We have decided to move with speed in accordance with the family’s wishes and the late Prime Minister’s desire to be buried within the shortest time possible,” Prof Kindiki said.
