Kuresoi North Member of Parliament (MP) Alfred Mutai is being detained at the Nakuru Central Police Station following his surrender to detectives investigating violent clashes that erupted during a youth empowerment programme in Kuresoi North last week.

According to reports, the legislator was taken into custody on Monday night shortly after presenting himself to officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), over his alleged involvement in chaos that left three people nursing gunshot injuries during the event attended by leaders allied to Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika.

Police added that at least five people were injured and vehicles were damaged during the event.

Mutai had been a wanted man since Friday. He later drove to Nakuru DCI offices with his lawyers, ready for the grilling session.

Although reports indicate that he has denied any wrongdoing, after spending hours at the station, the detectives decided to detain him pending further possible arraignment.

Police said they intended to present Mutai to court as investigations into the incident continue.

The latest development follows Friday’s violent clashes at a Youth and Women Empowerment Programme in Nyota Ward, Kuresoi North, where rival groups allegedly linked to Governor Susan Kihika and MP Mutai confronted each other.

Police said preliminary investigations showed that suspected goons allied to the MP clashed with supporters of the governor, leading to running battles that forced the event to end prematurely.

During the violence, three people sustained gunshot injuries, while a bus that had ferried tents and chairs to the venue was set ablaze by unknown individuals.

In a statement issued after the incident, National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga announced that police had launched a manhunt for Mutai and other individuals believed to have been involved in the chaos.

Earlier, President William Ruto, speaking during a burial service in Nandi County on Friday, directed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and security agencies to take firm action against the rising menace of goons and political violence.

NPS said preliminary investigations indicate that a confrontation broke out between groups of suspected goons allied to the MP and supporters of Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika.

Police further disclosed that officers have launched a manhunt to apprehend the legislator and other individuals believed to have been involved in the incident.

However, Mutai has consistently denied involvement in the violence, maintaining that he only learnt of allegations linking him to the incident through social media and insisting he did not know the circumstances that led to the clashes.

“I did not witness all that is in the media. Up to now, I do not know what happened,” he said.
