Building Collapses at Gikomba Days After Market Fire

The Kenya Red Cross has issued an update following the collapse of a building at Gikomba Market in Nairobi, an incident reportedly linked to the recent fire that affected the area.
In a statement dated June 26, 2026, the Kenya Red Cross confirmed that the overnight search and retrieval operation at Gikomba Market had been successfully concluded.
The operation was carried out jointly by the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade, Kenya Red Cross first responders, and the National Police Service.
“The overnight search and retrieval operation at Gikomba Market has been successfully concluded through the joint efforts of the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade, Kenya Red Cross first responders, and the National Police Service,” Kenya Red Cross stated.
Kenya Red Cross Gives Update on Gikomba Market Building Collapse
The collapse claimed the lives of two people, while several others were initially feared trapped beneath the rubble.
According to reports, Block B at Gikomba Market collapsed on Thursday evening after sustaining extensive structural damage during a fire that swept through the market early Sunday morning.

The building collapsed while a group of young people were inside collecting scrap materials and demolishing parts of the structure.
“Two people confirmed dead after a building collapse at Gikomba Market, with others potentially trapped. The collapse of Block B occurred on Thursday evening, following extensive damage from a fire earlier that Sunday.”
However, the Kenya Red Cross joined other emergency responders in search and rescue efforts to locate survivors and retrieve victims before concluding the operation.
Following the completion of the overnight operation, the Kenya Red Cross said it remains ready to provide psychosocial support to the affected families through the appropriate channels.
Authorities are expected to continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse as the affected families begin the recovery process.
Two People Killed in a Gikomba Fire on Sunday
This comes days after two people were killed, and four firefighters were injured in a fire incident at Gikomba Market on the morning of Sunday, June 21.
In a statement, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said the victims were one adult male and one adult female.

Sakaja stated that the bodies of the deceased are yet to be identified, and the emergency response teams will reach out to their families after verification and confirmation.
The fire outbreak was reported at Gikomba Market near the fish side area, affecting several businesses and leaving two people dead after starting at around 4:00 a.m., causing extensive damage.
