Police Boss Killed in Head-On Collision Along Machakos–Kitui Road

A tragic road accident along the Machakos–Kitui highway in Mwala Sub-County, Machakos County, claimed the life of a senior police officer after a violent high-speed collision.
The crash occurred on June 28, 2026, at about 11 pm in the King’atwani area, a section of the highway known for sharp bends and poor night visibility.
Authorities identified the deceased as Inspector Felistus Kateve Mbaluka, who served as the officer in charge of Makutano Police Patrol Base in Mwala Sub-County.
She drove a Toyota Vitz heading towards Kitui when the accident happened.
Police report that her vehicle moved into a head-on collision with an Isuzu FRR lorry travelling in the opposite direction.
The impact proved extremely forceful and left both vehicles badly damaged, while debris scattered across the roadway disrupted traffic flow.

Investigation Into the Accident
Investigators from the traffic division in Machakos County say the lorry driver survived the crash.
They have since taken him in for questioning as they work to establish how the two vehicles ended up in the same lane at the point of impact.
Following the collision, Inspector Mbaluka suffered catastrophic injuries, including fractures to both legs, both arms and her neck.
The severity of the injuries pointed to a high-impact crash, according to officers who responded to the scene.
Emergency Response and Death
Shortly after the accident, emergency responders rushed her to Tumaini Private Hospital in Masii Town.
Medical personnel immediately placed her under intensive care and worked to stabilise her condition. Despite these efforts, she died while receiving treatment.

Road Safety Concerns Re-emerge
As investigations continue, the accident has renewed debate about safety on Kenyan highways, especially shared routes used by both private vehicles and heavy commercial trucks.
Authorities continue to call for stricter adherence to traffic rules and improved road discipline to curb rising fatalities.
