WhatsApp Reveals New Details About Username Reservations
Share
WhatsApp launched username reservations this week and released answers to top user questions, allowing users to reserve handles ahead of a full rollout in 2026.
The app, owned by Meta, confirmed that usernames are optional and will not replace phone numbers during account setup.
“Username reservations are here, as more and more people claim theirs; here are answers to the top questions you’re asking,” WhatsApp posted on X.
The company said it opened reservations early because “people will feel strongly about what username they want on WhatsApp.”
The app clarified that users do not need a username to use WhatsApp and that this feature is optional.
Phone numbers will remain the primary identifier for accounts.

WhatsApp Username Security and Handle Reservation Policies
WhatsApp also confirmed that users cannot search for phone numbers or usernames within the app, making the design stop random people from contacting others without permission.
WhatsApp introduced a username key for added security.
The key works with the username, so another user must know both to start a chat.
However, one can reset the key at any time to stop new contacts from reaching them through the username.
The key will block attempts to claim reserved handles, and only genuine owners can claim those names.
“The Key will block attempts to claim reserved handles, making Instagram and Facebook usernames for their owners, along with well-known names and some variations, like those of public figures, celebrities, government entities, and Meta-verified accounts,” WhatsApp noted.
“People are making false claims about reserving popular or well-known usernames; this isn’t true. Only legitimate account owners can reserve well-known public-figure names.” The company noted.
WhatsApp’s username features and Privacy Controls
In cases of impersonation, WhatsApp said usernames are not yet usable for chatting.
But once implemented, messaging a new contact will display a warning that highlights the country of origin, as well as a first-time message alert.
The chat giant also continues to offer anti-spam mechanisms such as alerts on unknown contacts and the option to block and report.
Users can opt for another username once the first choice has been used, and they can opt to have their Instagram and Facebook usernames applied to WhatsApp after syncing accounts.
The accounts can be unlinked after their identity is confirmed, and users can pick a custom WhatsApp username.
