Bus Passenger Arrested After DCI Seizes Sh1 Million Heroin Haul

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a 38-year-old man after drugs worth about Ksh1 million were confiscated from his bag by police on a bus heading to Nairobi.

In a statement dated Thursday, July 2, 2026, the DCI stated that the police nabbed the suspect when their vehicle was intercepted along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway as they operated a Nairobi-bound Matatu.

The DCI reported that officers from the Transnational Organized Crime Unit conducted an operation at Taru following receipt of a tip‐off, which indicated illicit activity aboard the bus.

“A routine bus journey came to an abrupt end for one passenger after detectives from the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) intercepted a Nairobi-bound bus and uncovered a stash of heroin worth approximately Ksh 1 million,” the DCI said in a statement.

Details of a Drug Trafficking Arrest and Evidence Seizure

According to the agency, the suspect, identified as Brian Tabu Owuor and seated at number 29, was found in possession of a brown bag which contained four sachets of heroin weighing a total of 300 grams.

The discovery also encompassed Ksh 95,000 in cash, which investigators consider to be potential proceeds of crime because it was found alongside the narcotics.

Police immediately arrested the suspect and placed him in custody, where he is undergoing processing pending arraignment in court, a procedure that ensures adherence to legal protocols.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations stated that the seized heroin has been secured as an exhibit while inquiries proceed.

The recovered cash has likewise been detained as evidence while investigators seek to establish the origin of the narcotics and their intended destination.
