Share
Felista Mutheu Mugo, popularly known as “The Young Queen,” is one of Kenya’s fastest-rising combat sports stars.
She has made history as the first Kenyan woman to compete professionally in the Professional Fighters League (PFL Africa), becoming a pioneer for women’s MMA in the country.
Felista was born on February 15, 2000, in Kibwezi before growing up in Nairobi’s South B estate.
She developed an interest in martial arts at a young age, beginning with karate and Tong-Il Moo-Do, where she quickly excelled.
Before switching to MMA, she won multiple national medals, including two gold medals in Tong-Il Moo-Do and a national karate title.
Felista briefly attended Kenyatta University, but later chose to pursue mixed martial arts full-time after realizing her potential in the sport.
How Felista Mugo Entered MMA
Interestingly, MMA was never part of her career plan.
While training in karate in 2019, one of her coaches asked if she would be interested in taking part in an MMA fight.
“I had never heard of MMA before, but he convinced me to give it a try. I won that fight.”
That unexpected victory sparked her passion for the sport, and she never looked back.
Professional Career
Felista turned professional in 2023 and quickly built an impressive résumé competing across African promotions, including:

- Warrior Sports Championship
- Impact Championship
- Global Warrior Champions
- Professional Fighters League
One of her biggest early victories came in June 2024 when she knocked out South African fighter Aneesha Mayman at EFC 114, a performance that significantly raised her profile.

Making her debut against Uganda’s Anne Kiiza, Felista secured a dominant unanimous decision victory despite losing 20% of her purse after narrowly missing the weight limit.
After the fight, she said, “Being the first-ever female fighter from Kenya on this stage is an amazing thing.”
The victory placed Kenya firmly on Africa’s growing MMA map.
Training Base
To compete at the highest level, Felista relocated to Lubumbashi, where she trains at the renowned Elite Training Centre, regarded as one of Africa’s leading MMA gyms.

She combines:
