A young man identified as Driffel, also known as Driffo, reportedly died at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on July 3, at night, after his family allegedly failed to raise the upfront payment required for admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), despite having coverage under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Following the incident, anger and grief swept across sections of KNH as friends and family questioned the circumstances surrounding his death and the hospital’s response.

Earlier that night, attackers reportedly assaulted Driffel before his friends rushed him to KNH. When he arrived, his condition was critical and required immediate medical attention.

“We arrived here a long time ago… They are just left him in bed without doing anything. This hospital is not meant to help people,” a friend said.

Claims of Denied ICU Admission at KNH Over Payment

However, witnesses say hospital staff declined to admit him to the Intensive Care Unit and instead demanded upfront payment before beginning treatment.

Despite this, reports indicate that Driffel was registered under SHA, a program designed to ease access to healthcare services for Kenyans.

Meanwhile, Driffel’s condition worsened as he remained at the Accident and Emergency unit without receiving critical care. His parents, who struggled financially, began calling friends and relatives in a desperate attempt to raise the required funds. Time, however, worked against them.

Eventually, as friends and well-wishers started arriving at the hospital to offer support, Driffel succumbed to his injuries.

His death immediately sparked outrage, with those present questioning why the hospital allegedly withheld emergency care.

Tension Rises as Friends Demand Answers

Soon after, tensions escalated when the group confronted hospital authorities and demanded answers.

Security officers stepped in and detained some of the agitated individuals. However, as the crowd grew and pressure mounted, officers later released them.

In a dramatic turn of events, the crowd took the young man’s body from the hospital premises as emotions boiled over and protests intensified.

Consequently, the situation raises serious concerns about the implementation of the SHA system and whether it truly serves its intended purpose.

Kenyans now demand accountability, urging Kenyatta National Hospital management to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident and clarify whether financial requirements take priority over life-saving care in emergencies.

By the time of publication, KNH had not issued an official statement addressing the allegations.
