Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen instructed a security-on-the-wheel in Samburu and Kerio Valley on July 5, 2026, stating that the chiefs and sub-chiefs ought to be constituted within a span of a week 7days.
While attending a church service at the Kerio Valley, he intimated to the County Commissioner to hasten the interview processes to ensure the newly gazetted officers are appointed next week.
“I have directed that all the areas that the government had gazetted earlier be published; I am directing the County Commissioner to expedite the process of interviews of Chiefs and Sub-Chiefs before the end of this week,” Said Murkomen.

North Rift Security Operation Targets Banditry and Cattle Rustling, Murkomen Seizes 2,600 Firearms
The operation is meant to fight criminal activities, including banditry and cattle rustling that have manifested in organized violence in Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo and West Pokot regions.
The police have identified the use of sophisticated guns and the existence of criminal cartels that have links in the hills of Tiaty, Silale and Nadome.
About 2600 firearms have already been seized by the Kenyan security forces in the North Rift during Operation Rudisha Bunduki.
Murkomen also made an order about Samburu West, which was gazetted in 2024 as the only extra sub-county of Samburu County with Loosuk.
Loosuk Division belongs to Samburu West, and Murkomen ardently required additional security personnel to be posted for the division to curb banditry.
The CS has also reopened the Special Operations Group, an elite counter-terrorism group, and has requested that additional Kenya Police Reserve officers be sent to the region.
He reminded civilians not to keep illegal guns and urged against the practice politicians used to arm the youth.
“I am warning any politician in this area: if you are caught selling guns to these youths, your days are numbered,” he said, adding, “If you’re a youth and are caught with a gun, sold to you by a politician, you will carry your own cross in the face of justice.”

Marsabit County Declared ‘Security Compromised’ for 30 Days, Arms Surrender Ordered
The orders followed one day after Murkomen declared parts of Marsabit County ‘security compromised’ for a period of 30 days.
The order became effective as of 23rd June 2026 at 6:30 p.m., and citizens were required to hand over all arms.
According to the government’s administrative list, as released in a 2024 gazette notice, there are now 578 new administrative divisions at the national level, across 31 counties.
Murkomen’s strategies put the chiefs in those zones in place at first, assuming that the local government could settle the unpredictable northern pastoralist zone more quickly than the military could do it on its own.
