Council of Legal Education Releases Updated List of Licensed Law Schools in Kenya

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released an updated list of licensed law schools and legal programmes in Kenya, including institutions awaiting licensing decisions.
In the notice dated June 30, 2026, CLE stated that the listed institutions are the only licensed providers authorised to offer legal education programmes in Kenya under the Legal Education Act.
“ Under the provisions of Sections 2, 8 (1) (b), 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 48 of the Legal Education Act, Chapter 16B, Laws of Kenya, the following are the ONLY licensed Legal Education Providers and Legal Education Programmes in Kenya as indicated under each respective cluster,” read part of the notice.

According to CLE, several universities have submitted applications for the renewal of their Bachelor of Laws (LLB) licences.

CLE also published a separate list of universities whose applications are currently under consideration and have yet to receive approval.

The council is also reviewing new applications from Rongo University, Kenya Methodist University, and Murang’a University of Technology to offer the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme.
Additionally, Mount Kenya University has submitted an application seeking approval to offer a Master of Laws (LLM) programme, which is also awaiting the council’s decision.
