PLP Party Leader Martha Karua has clarified that the United Opposition Coalition has not yet decided how it will select its presidential flag bearer amid public speculation over its 2027 election plans.
In a statement dated July 9, Karua said the United Alternative Government (UAG) has not completed the process of establishing its governance structures. As a result, it has not made any decision on the process, criteria, or timeline for selecting its presidential candidate.
“While our coalition continues to grow in strength and public confidence, we have not yet concluded the process of establishing the formal structures, governance framework, and rules that will guide our engagement. Consequently, no decision has been made on the process, criteria, or timeline for selecting the coalition’s presidential flag bearer,” read part of the statement.

UAG is an opposition coalition comprising the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), Jubilee Party, United Progressive Independent Alliance (UPIA), and the Party of National Unity (PNU).
The coalition is co-convened by Martha Karua and Wiper Democratic Movement leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and is positioning itself as an alternative to President William Ruto’s administration ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Karua added that the coalition remains committed to building a political alliance anchored in consultation, inclusivity, mutual respect, and agreed processes.

She also noted that these principles are intended to distinguish the coalition as it seeks to present Kenyans with what she described as a credible, democratic, and principled alternative.
Karua said the coalition established a Technical Committee led by former Cabinet minister Kipruto Arap Kirwa to develop proposals on formalising the alliance’s operations.
The leaders are also expected to deliberate on and adopt a common agenda focusing on democratic renewal, economic transformation, and constitutional governance.
Flag Bearer to Be Chosen Through Consultation
She further acknowledged that every Kenyan, including members and principals of the coalition, has a constitutional right to express personal preferences on who should become the coalition’s presidential candidate.
However, Karua stated that selecting the coalition’s flag bearer remains one of its most significant decisions and will only be made through an agreed consultative framework and established coalition structures.

She also disclosed that the Technical Committee had already consulted both her and Kalonzo Musyoka to identify suitable dates for a retreat where coalition principals will consider the committee’s recommendations.
“The Technical Committee consulted me only last week and confirmed that it had similarly engaged my Co-Convenor, Hon. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, with the objective of identifying mutually convenient dates for the Principals’ retreat. We look forward to convening that meeting in the near future,” Karua stated.
Karua said the coalition would communicate its decisions to Kenyans at the appropriate time through its official communication channels.
