HELB Warns Students Against Fake WhatsApp Groups Charging Loan Application Fees

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has cautioned students against joining fake WhatsApp groups that claim to assist with first-time loan applications in exchange for money.
The warning comes after fraudsters began circulating misleading messages, promising to help students secure higher funding bands, sponsorship documents, and other application services for a fee.
In a public notice released on July 14, HELB urged students and parents to ignore the fake groups and rely only on its official communication platforms for accurate information.
The agency also warned that no one should pay to receive assistance with a first-time HELB loan application.
“Beware of fake WhatsApp Groups purporting to assist students with the HELB First Time Loan application at a fee.”
HELB added,”Don’t be conned. Always check HELB’s Official Pages for accurate information.”

HELB Warns Against Fake Messages Promising Sponsorship Documents
The fake WhatsApp messages shared online claim that sponsorship documents are available and encourage students to send direct messages to “secure a higher band.”
Other messages falsely advertise single-parent documents and tell students to contact the administrators for HELB application assistance before university admissions begin.
HELB has dismissed these claims, saying they are part of a scam designed to trick students into paying for services that are either free or not offered through unofficial channels.

Students Urged to Use Official Channels
HELB advised all applicants to obtain updates only from its verified platforms, including its official WhatsApp channel and website.
The board reminded students that official application procedures, loan announcements, and funding information are communicated through its verified channels, not through private WhatsApp groups or individuals requesting payment.
Students have also been encouraged to report suspicious messages and avoid sharing personal information or sending money to unknown people claiming to represent HELB.
As universities prepare to admit new students, HELB said staying informed through its official platforms is the best way to avoid falling victim to fraud.
