Senator Gloria Orwoba has called on the diplomatic community in Kenya to respond swiftly to credible warnings of political violence, urging international partners to support efforts to prevent election unrest.
In an open letter addressed to ambassadors, high commissioners, heads of mission, and representatives of international organizations, with copies sent to the President of the UN Human Rights Council, the African Union (AU), and the European Union (EU).
Orwoba said early warning assessments should be taken seriously to help avert potential conflict.
The senator referred to recent public conflict risk assessments, including those attributed to the Kofi Annan Foundation, which have raised concerns about the possibility of election-related violence in the country.
2007 Post-Election Violence
She said that early warnings exist so that the government, the international community, and institutions can act on time and not after lives have been lost.
Additionally, Orwoba said that Kenya’s experience during the 2007 post-election violence demonstrates the need to be prepared early to prevent it from taking place again.

“Kenya has experienced the devastating consequences of political violence before. The lessons of 2007-08 remain painful. Preventing a repeat requires vigilance, restraint, respect for constitutional rights, and accountability for anyone who incites, organizes, or perpetrates violence,” she said in her statement.
She also emphasized the need for vigilance, restraint, respect for the constitution and accountability for those who incite, organize, or perpetrate any form of violence.
Diplomatic Community
On the same note, Orwoba also urged the diplomatic community to remain consistent in promoting the rule of law and human rights, especially during times of heightened political tension.
According to Orwoba, this is a critical moment for diplomatic engagement with all stakeholders to encourage peaceful politics and a transparent democratic process.

She urged diplomatic partners to use appropriate channels to support dialogue, de-escalation, respect for human rights and the protection of democratic institutions.
