Fresh Twist as CCTV Footage Raises New Questions About Albert Ojwang’s Final Moments

The prosecution in the murder trial of the late Albert Ojwang has presented CCTV evidence showing that he was alive and responsive when he arrived at Central Police Station but was later removed from the facility while unresponsive.

The evidence was presented before the Kibera High Court by Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Head of Forensics Joshua Mutua.

Mutua, a video investigations specialist, took the court through a forensic reconstruction of events at the police station on June 7, 2025.

The witness used CCTV footage, photographs and forensic analysis of the station’s surveillance system to explain the movement of Ojwang and police officers within the facility.

He also showed the court the layout of Central Police Station and identified areas covered by different CCTV cameras.

Mutua told the court that the recovered footage showed Ojwang arriving at the station alive and responsive.

He said the footage later showed Ojwang being removed from the station while unresponsive.

The testimony provided the prosecution with a detailed account of events from the time Ojwang was brought to the station until he was taken away.

CCTV System was Allegedly Formatted

Mutua told the court that his investigations began on June 9, 2025, when he visited Central Police Station with fellow investigator Naphtali Nduhi.

Before visiting the station, he contacted a technician identified as Dan. The technician was unavailable but referred him to Aaron, who had taken part in the installation of the station’s CCTV system in 2024.

According to Mutua, he met Aaron outside the office of the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) before they entered the office to examine the Digital Video Recorder (DVR).

The witness told the court that the DVR had been disconnected from the power supply.

After the system was reconnected, Mutua examined the DVR logs.

He testified that the forensic analysis showed the device had been formatted at 7:30:14 a.m. on June 8, 2025, while it was located inside the OCS’s office.

Forensic Recovery Retrieved Key Footage of Albert and the Officers

Despite the formatting of the DVR, Mutua said investigators used forensic recovery techniques to retrieve important CCTV footage.

The recovered footage covered Central Police Station and Mbagathi, providing evidence on the movements and interactions involving Ojwang and police officers.

Mutua also told the court that he prepared and signed a forensic exhibit report on June 9, 2025.

The report documented the seizure of the DVR and its condition after the alleged tampering.

Records Officer also Continued Testimony

Before Mutua took the witness stand, the prosecution recalled Prosecution Witness Three, an officer attached to the records office at Central Police Station.

The officer continued giving evidence on the deletion of CCTV footage covering June 6 and June 7, 2025.

She further explained the circumstances surrounding the deletion of the surveillance recordings on June 8, 2025.
