Former Kenyan Rugby Star Deported from U.S. Following Immigration Order

Former Kenyan rugby star and ex-Indianapolis Colts linebacker Daniel Adongo has been deported from the US after an immigration judge ordered his removal following multiple arrests and convictions.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported that it removed 37-year-old Kenyan national Adongo on June 20 following a final removal order from a Department of Justice immigration judge made on 23 March 2026.

ICE said that Adongo had overstayed his visa in 2016 following the conclusion of his National Football League career the previous year.

Deportation of Criminal Immigrant Adongo and the Laken Riley Act

As for ICE Chicago, Adongo has had many arrests in Indiana over the last nine years on charges of felony intimidation, battery, and disorderly conduct.

They have also reported that he was convicted of criminal mischief, which involves property damage, in the year 2020 and sentenced to a year in jail.

His Newest criminal charges also invoked the Laken Riley Act, a United States law signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on January 29, 2025.

The statute mandates detention without bail of alleged undocumented immigrants suspected of specified crimes while immigration proceedings are progressing.

In announcing Adongo’s deportation, ICE Chicago Assistant Field Office Director Douglas Thompson stated that it was a public safety issue.

“This dangerous individual was clearly a threat to the community, which is now safer since he’s been removed,” Thompson said.

He added that immigration action takes everyone into account, famous or not.

“Those who violate immigration law are held equally accountable, including former professional athletes,” Thompson said.

Immigration Enforcement and the Deportation of Criminal Immigrants

Adongo became a rugby union international before being picked up by the Indianapolis Colts in 2013 via the NFL’s international player pathway program. Despite being unfamiliar with the American version of the sport, he was a member of the Colts for a couple of seasons from 2013-15, playing linebacker.

In a wider statement that also accompanied the announcement, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said its enforcement agencies keep focusing on the arrest and deportation of illegal immigrants who have criminal convictions.

The department stated that the overwhelming majority of ICE enforcement actions are against aliens who have committed crimes or who have been previously convicted of crimes in the United States and that immigration officials have a fully interoperable system for federal immigration enforcement.
