Panic for 2026 Candidates as KNUT Threatens to Boycott National Exams

The Kenya National Union of Teachers KNUT has threatened to boycott supervision and invigilation of the coming national examinations if the government does not pay teachers the arrears for the 2004 examinations.

Union officials lamented the government’s default in settling the arrears of thousands of teachers during the funeral of NBC teachers union member and a teacher, the late Lucy Maina, at Gatero Village in Laikipia West.

According to the union officials, the Treasury has released Ksh 1.5 billion to settle the Ksh 180 billion owed to the teachers.

Teachers Threaten Boycott of 2026 Exams if Unpaid for 2025 Invigilation Duties. 

KNUT spoke of several teachers who were invigilators and supervisors for the 2025 national examinations and had not been paid for their services, and said the delay is due to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) CP2 verification system.

“We want that money paid for supervision and invigilation in the year 2025. If that does not happen, don’t expect any teacher to participate in any supervision or invigilation in the year 2026,” a KNUT official warned.

The warning was issued only two months ahead of Kenya’s national examinations set to commence. Any default could cause problems.

Another union representative, however, wondered why teachers were still awaiting their salaries when they were told already that they had been paid from the account.

“From last year, teachers invigilated and supervised all the national exams, and up to now they have not been paid,” the official said, adding, “We are indeed perplexed when we hear CS Mbadi saying that he released that money, KSh1.5 billion, to pay teachers, and it has not reached teachers. We are tired of being told now and then that the system has gone down. The system has broken.”

KNUT Blames SHA for Poor Teacher Medical Cover, Demanding Allowance Payments

KNUT also held the Social Health Authority (SHA) responsible for failing to provide effective medical cover for large numbers of teachers under the current health insurance system, with many lacking proper covers.

“Currently, we have some teachers who are still in the hospital waiting to be released. And yet the SHA is not working,” another union official said.

The union appealed to the government to immediately address the backlog of examination allowances owed and unveil a more expansive and dependable health insurance scheme for teachers in the country to avoid industrial unrest during national examinations.
