Fresh Details Emerge on Student Who Introduced Husband During Prayer Day

Recent videos from two Kenyan schools during a Form Four prayer day function have sparked a heated online debate over the role parents play in allowing students to publicly acknowledge their romantic partners during school events.

The discussions followed separate prayer day incidents in which one Form Four candidate introduced her husband before fellow students, teachers and guests, while another student was surprised with gifts and money from her boyfriend, who works in Qatar.

At Laliat Secondary School, Form Four candidate Mercy Chepng’eno Ruto, a teen mother of two, introduced her husband while giving a speech during the school’s prayer day, leaving many attendees surprised.

She explained that she first completed Form Four in 2017 before getting married but later decided to return to school after financial challenges.

“For me to be back in school, it is because of our mother,” she said, referring to the school principal who sponsored her education.

“We stayed together from 2017, 2018 and 2019. But life at home had its challenges. Without money, life is not easy. If there is no money, you cannot do anything.”

She said her husband could not afford to pay her school fees, forcing her to seek help elsewhere.

“I tried to meet the MCA three times, but none of the appointments was successful. Then I saw on TV that the school principal had sponsored another lady, so I decided to try my luck.”

She thanked both her husband and the principal for supporting her education.

“Since I joined this school, my average grade has always been C+ and above. The lowest I have scored is a C. I promise to pass my KCSE and attain a university entry grade.”

Qatar-Based Boyfriend Surprises Form Four Candidate During Prayer Day

In a separate incident from another school, a Form Four candidate broke down in tears after receiving flowers, money and a success message from her boyfriend, who works in Qatar.

The gifts were presented during the school’s prayer day, drawing applause from some students while triggering debate online.

The video quickly spread across social media, where Kenyans questioned whether parents and guardians had normalised such relationships.

Kenyans Question Parents’ Role

Many social media users argued that parents should bear responsibility if they knowingly allow such relationships involving students.

X user Roddie wrote, “Ukiskia boyfriend based in Qatar unajua tu the parents have been benefiting from him, they know about it and they allow it. Poverty huwa one very bad thing man.”

Sheila tweeted, “Arrest the parents???”

Mussolini questioned the legality of the situation, “Okay but like seriously, what counts as pedophilia in this country? Cause isn’t this????”

Others argued that not every secondary school student is under 18.

Mr Guantai said, “Hate to be the devil’s advocate, but being in secondary school doesn’t necessarily mean she’s a minor. Maybe she just went back to school late.”

Audrey shared her experience, saying, “I saw this a lot in high school. Students being visited by their ‘boyfriends’ who came in with family members, especially during visiting days. This happens more than people would like to admit. We have too many enablers out there giving weirdos easy access.”

Some users defended the relationships, saying mature learners are also enrolled in secondary schools.

Evansoo wrote, “These things happen on the ground… it leads to very nice marriages. Anyway, I don’t know why people are condemning them.”

Mkwara added, “She is clearly a ngumbaru student pursuing her dreams with the support of the husband. Tulia msichana.”

Kijana Misa, who shared the Qatar surprise video, wrote, “The Form Four girl burst into tears of joy after receiving a success letter and money from her boyfriend, who works in Qatar. The incident surprised fellow students and teachers during their school’s Prayer Day ceremony. Many of them were touched by the strong bond and love shared between the girl and her boyfriend and they expressed their support for their relationship.”

The two incidents have continued to reignite discussions about parental responsibility, child protection and the reality that some Kenyan secondary schools also enrol adult learners who returned to complete their education years after leaving school.
