ANSWERED: Is Interior CS Murkomen Planning to Arrest Gachagua?

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has dismissed claims that he is planning to arrest former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying he will not be distracted by the politician’s public attacks and will instead remain focused on his duties.

In a statement released on Thursday, August 6, Murkomen accused Gachagua of using divisive politics, ethnic rhetoric and political mobilisation to strengthen his influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Murkomen said he has been following Gachagua’s recent public remarks with concern, claiming they are designed to create divisions and pressure politicians into joining his political party.

“I have been following with concern and shock Rigathi Gachagua’s public pronouncements and talks in recent days,” Murkomen said.

He added that Gachagua’s “daily diatribe, interspersed with vitriol, misogyny, lies, ethnic jingoism and hate” was intended to sow division, incite violence and portray himself as a regional political kingpin.

Murkomen dismissed the idea of political kingpins, saying such a position has no place in Kenya’s Constitution.

“Kingpinship is a vacuous title and the sole preoccupation of idle minds.”

Murkomen Says Attacks are Meant to Distract Him

The Interior CS said Gachagua has repeatedly criticised his handling of security matters, but claimed the attacks are meant to divert attention from what he described as the former deputy president’s own activities.

“He besmirches my name daily in the name of criticising security failures, while in the real sense, he is trying to divert my attention away from the clandestine criminal activities that he executes through his lieutenants.”

Murkomen further alleged that Gachagua had enlisted political allies from the Rift Valley to support what he described as a coordinated campaign against him.

“After realizing that his attacks were not enough to shake my resolve, he has now changed tack and activated his sleeper cell of political accomplices from Rift Valley to aid him in his nefarious plot.”

He also claimed it was not a coincidence that Gachagua had echoed accusations made earlier in the week by some politicians.

Is the CS Planning to Arrest Gachagua?

Despite his strong criticism of the former deputy president, Murkomen did not indicate that he intends to arrest Gachagua or take any action against him.

Instead, he made it clear that he will continue focusing on his responsibilities as Interior Cabinet Secretary rather than engaging in political exchanges.

“I remain steadfast and unwavering in discharging my duties, and when time allows, will join Wananchi in any part of the country in worship and other social activities as usual.”

Murkomen also urged Kenyans to be cautious of what he described as Gachagua’s attempts to exploit political differences and ethnic identities for political gain.

“I urge the people to beware of this latest plot twist in Gachagua’s malignant influence.”

The remarks come as Gachagua continues to build political alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election, holding consultations with leaders and delegations at his Wamunyoro residence while calling for a united opposition to challenge President William Ruto.
