Suna East MP and National Assembly Majority Leader Junet Mohammed has now changed his tune, stating that legislators were not bribed to impeach former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a TV interview, Junet was forced to explain his sentiments that money exchanged hands during the process, as previously stated by Gachagua.
In the claims, Junet said some money was moving around during the impeachment, and some MPs who received it did not even construct their homesteads.
“When we were impeaching former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, there was some money that was moving around in Parliament. I will say the truth, there was something moving around. There are some people that received the money but have not constructed their homesteads. Impeachment does not come every day. If you got something from Gachagua’s impeachment, please make your homestead well,,” Junet said.

However, Junet has now backtracked, saying he personally did not receive any money during the impeachment.
He argued that his statement should be understood in the political context of lobbying during such motions in Parliament.
Junet stated that no money was paid, adding that what he meant was people trying to convince others to support the impeachment.
“I did not receive any money. I did not need any money to impeach Gachagua. You have to look at some things in the context of politics. Parliaments across the world have lobbying systems, and some even require lobbyists to register with Parliament. I was speaking in the context of people lobbying and some people talking to others to support the impeachment,” Junet said.

MPs Were Tired of Gachagua
Junet insisted that MPs from all the political sides were tired of Gachagua’s conduct, hence the impeachment.
He revealed that ODM held a meeting and discussed the impeachment at length before deciding to impeach the former DP.
“Gachagua was impeached in a bipartisan manner; people were tired of him. Personally, as ODM, we had a meeting, and we discussed Gachagua at length before we even started appending our signatures,” he said.
“What we remembered were a few things, like when he was having a meeting at 5 am with policemen to go and deal with us in the streets. Those are some of the things that motivated us.”

What “Kitu” Means
When pressed further, Junet said “kitu” can mean many things and insisted that his statement referred purely to lobbying.
Junet said he would explain what he meant by “kitu” once the campaign period kicks off.
“Kitu in Kiswahili means many things. That “kitu” will be substantiated in a proper manner very soon. Give it time; the campaign time has started, and we will explain it,” he said.
