Elvis Opiyo, NIS Officer Linked to Claire Ochieng Acid Attack, Found Dead

Elvis Opiyo, who had been implicated in the acid attack involving Claire Ochieng, has reportedly been found dead in Umoja, Nairobi.

Opiyo was reportedly found dead in Umoja on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, with initial reports suggesting that his death may have been a suspected suicide.

However, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, with police expected to establish what happened as investigations continue.

Opiyo had previously been named in reports concerning the acid attack on Ochieng, who sustained severe injuries in the incident.

Ochieng has been recovering from the injuries following the attack, which attracted public attention and prompted investigations into those believed to have been involved.

Elvis Opiyo Found Dead in Umoja

Following news of his death, several people and ministers from the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church sent messages of condolence, mourning Opiyo as a fellow minister and servant of God.

In a message addressed to the Lighthouse Ministries family, Lamb’s ministers described Opiyo as a “brother in Christ” and a co-labourer in the work of the Lord.

“On behalf of Lamb’s fellow ministers, we extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the entire Lighthouse Ministries family on the passing of our beloved brother and fellow servant, Elvis Opiyo,” the message read.

The ministers said they were mourning with the Lighthouse Ministries family during the difficult period, describing Opiyo as not only a fellow minister but also a brother in Christ whose life and service had touched God’s people.

“His life, service, and the impact he made among God’s people will remain in our hearts,” they said.

Activist Paul Nekko urged the public to reflect on how it judges people accused of wrongdoing, saying Opiyo may have been overwhelmed by shame, condemnation, and personal struggles.

“We judged him harshly. We condemned him. We reduced him to the worst thing he had ever done. And now, depression has won,” Nekko said.

Nekko described Opiyo as the man who had been accused of burning Claire with acid and said there was “nothing to celebrate” about his reported death.

“A terrible act does not make a human life worthless, and a painful story does not end when the headlines disappear,” he said.

According to Nekko, Opiyo may have been dealing with emotional struggles that were not visible to the public.

“Somewhere along the way, a broken man became overwhelmed by shame, condemnation, pain, and whatever battles were raging inside him,” he said.

How Claire’s Acid Attack Led Investigators to NIS Officer

Elvis Okoth Opiyo was identified as the main suspect in a series of attacks against Nairobi-based SDA musician Claire Ochieng following the end of their relationship.

The most serious incident occurred on March 17, 2026, along Ngong Road, where a man allegedly threw concentrated sulfuric acid at Claire, leaving her with severe burns to her face, chest, arms, and thigh. The attacker, identified as boda boda rider Lucas Ochieng, was reportedly apprehended at the scene and allegedly told investigators he had been sent.

Investigators later linked Opiyo to the attack, with reports alleging that he hired individuals to target Claire. She had reportedly experienced several other attacks and threats in the months before the acid incident.

Opiyo was arrested in March 2026 and arraigned at Kibera Law Courts, where he faced charges linked to the alleged attacks. He denied the allegations and was placed on remand as investigations continued.
