Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has revealed that he asked President William Ruto not to attend the burial of his late wife, Gloria Sekeiyan, after the President asked him to prepare a place where his plane could land.
Speaking during the burial service at Malinya Stadium in Kakamega County on Friday, August 21, Khalwale said President Ruto had reached out ahead of the funeral and asked him to provide coordinates for a place where his plane could land.
Khalwale, however, said he declined the offer and conveyed his request through Ruto’s personal assistant, Farouk Kibet.
“William Ruto asked me to send coordinates for his plane to land. I told him through his PA, Farouk Kibet, that when someone is bereaved, you do not need to ask them to send you landing coordinates,” Khalwale said.

The senator also explained that he wanted the burial of Gloria, whom he described as the mother of his children, to remain a family occasion.
“I asked him that I want the burial service of my wife, the mother of my kids, to be as nice as this, that he should not come,” Khalwale said.

Although Ruto did not attend the burial, he had publicly condoled with Khalwale and his family following Gloria’s sudden death on August 15, 2026.
The President and First Lady Rachel Ruto expressed their condolences, saying they stood with the senator and his family during this period, when he described the death of a spouse, companion and mother as a painful loss that leaves a deep void in a family.
In Ruto’s absence, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula visited the Khalwale family home to convey his condolences.
Wetang’ula said he was conveying Ruto’s condolences and gesture of goodwill to the family following Gloria’s death and called on politicians to put aside their political differences and stand with Khalwale and his family during the difficult period.
