Nation Media Group Announces Leadership Changes Months After Takeover by Tanzanian Tycoon

Nation Media Group PLC (NMG) has announced changes to its Board of Directors months after Tanzanian businessman Rostam Azizi completed a transaction involving the media company, with four directors exiting and six new members joining the Board.
The changes took effect on August 28, 2026, following the conclusion of the recent transaction, according to a statement from NMG Group Chairman Joe Muganda.
Sultan Ali Akbar Allana, Fayyaz Nurmohamed, Al-Noor Ramji and Nancy Booker are stepping down from the Board after serving in different capacities across the Board and its committees.
Muganda said the departing directors had offered valuable experience and guidance to NMG during their tenure.
“Each has served Nation Media Group in different capacities across the Board and its committees, bringing valuable experience, counsel and perspective to the Group,” Muganda said.
NMG Appoints Six New Directors
As the four directors exit, NMG has appointed Julie Gichuru, Julius Kangogo Kipngetich, Juliana Rotich, Georgia Mutagahywa, Bharat Thakrar and Wilfred Musau to its Board.
The six directors bring experience spanning media, communications, technology, digital transformation, financial services, corporate leadership, governance, marketing and stakeholder engagement.
Gichuru previously worked at NMG during the launch of NTV as a news anchor and talent manager.
She brings more than two decades of experience in broadcast journalism, communications and development and currently serves as Founder, President and CEO of the Africa Leadership and Dialogue Institute.
Meanwhile, Rotich brings more than two decades of experience in technology and financial services.
She is the Founder and CEO of Kehmett Consulting Limited and previously served as CEO of Electronic Citizen Solutions and Head of Fintech Solutions at Safaricom PLC. She also co-founded technology companies, including Ushahidi.

Kipngetich Brings More Than Three Decades of Experience
Kipngetich, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Jubilee Holdings Limited, brings more than three decades of experience in institutional transformation, strategy and governance.
His previous roles include Chief Operating Officer at Equity Bank, Director General and CEO of the Kenya Wildlife Service, and CEO of Uchumi Supermarkets.
Similarly, Thakrar brings more than five decades of experience in advertising and marketing communications.
He founded Scanad Marketing Kenya in 1982 and later built several businesses that were consolidated under Scangroup Plc.
Musau brings more than two decades of experience in banking, financial services and governance.
He previously served as Managing Director and CEO of the National Bank of Kenya, where he helped return the bank to profitability and later steered its merger with KCB Bank Group.
Mutagahywa brings more than three decades of experience in corporate affairs and government relations across telecommunications, mining, brewing, consumer goods and media.
She currently serves as Chief of Staff to the Chairman of the Taifa Group of Companies.
Muganda said the new directors would strengthen NMG’s Board as the media company responds to changes and opportunities within the industry.
“They bring a strong combination of experience across media, communications, technology, digital transformation, financial services, corporate leadership, governance, marketing and stakeholder engagement,” Muganda said.
He added that their regional and international experience would give NMG broader perspectives as it navigates the evolving media landscape.
“Their diverse perspectives and experience across East Africa and beyond will strengthen the Board as Nation Media Group continues to evolve and respond to the opportunities and challenges shaping our industry,” Muganda said.

Four Directors Exit NMG Board
Meanwhile, NMG formally confirmed the departure of the four Non-Executive Directors, with their resignations taking effect on August 28, 2026.
“The Board also announces the resignations of the following Non-Executive Directors with effect from 28 August 2026,” NMG said.
Ramji had served on the Board since March 2020 and sat on the Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee and the Strategy and Investments Committee.
Allana and Nurmohamed joined the Board in May 2024, while Booker joined in July 2024.
NMG also recognised the contribution of the four directors as they leave the Board.
“On behalf of the Board and Nation Media Group, I extend our sincere appreciation to them for their dedicated service and contribution to the organisation and wish them every success in the future,” Muganda said.
The changes mark a new phase for NMG as the company brings together directors with expertise across media, technology, finance, governance and corporate leadership.
