Murkomen Responds to Shadow Police Groups Not Commanded by IG Kanja

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has dismissed claims that there are police units operating outside the command of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, describing the allegations as false propaganda.

Murkomen insisted that the National Police Service remains united and that all its units operate within the established command structure under the Inspector General.

“To those who are suggesting that there are units of police officers who are commanded away from the National Police Service and the Inspector General of Police, IG Kanja, those are false propagandists,” Murkomen said.

He said the service was well trained and adequately resourced through support from President William Ruto and Parliament, adding that officers would continue working to ensure Kenya remains a strong and secure nation.

“We have a full unity in the National Police Service. We are well trained, well resourced by you, Your Excellency, and Parliament, and we will continue working to make sure that this nation remains a great nation,” Murkomen said.

Gachagua’s Claims on Police Command

Murkomen’s comments come as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua continues to raise questions over the command of some police officers.

In July, Gachagua wrote to Kanja ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, questioning the deployment of more than 2,000 officers and alleging that some plain-clothes officers were operating outside the Inspector General’s authority.

Gachagua referred to them as “plain-clothes rogue police officers outside of your command” and called for officers deployed for the election to be identifiable, uniformed and assigned to clearly marked police vehicles.

The former Deputy President had also raised similar concerns in June, when he accused Murkomen of taking over the National Police Service and creating a parallel command structure. Murkomen rejected the allegations at the time.

Gachagua’s claims have not been independently established, but they have continued to fuel debate over who exercises operational control over specialised and plain-clothes police units.

Murkomen’s latest statement directly pushes back against that narrative, with the Interior CS maintaining that there is no breakaway command within the National Police Service and that officers remain under the authority of Kanja.
