The Kenya Elite Special Operations Group (SOG) stopped 8 Alshabaab terrorists who were attempting to set up Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDS) at the Welmerer-Yumbia area in Garissa.

In a statement, Counter Terrorism Policing said the SOG swiftly responded to information reported by the local community that 8 terrorists had been spotted attempting to set up IEDS.

The Brave officers engaged the terrorists and managed to recover assembled IEDS, which were to be used to attack our mothers, children, and security officers using the Welmerer-Yumbis road.

“The SOG appreciates the cooperation of the local community and other stakeholders and urges for enhanced vigilance to stop any terror plots,” Counter Terrorism Policing said.

Security sources described the operation as a significant success in the ongoing fight against terrorism in northeastern Kenya, noting that the area has remained a target for cross-border Al-Shabaab operatives due to its proximity to Somalia.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing as the SOG and other specialized units pursue the fleeing terrorists believed to have escaped during the confrontation.

After the swift operation, security has been heightened across the region, with patrols intensified along major roads and border points.

The National Police Service has reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, emphasizing that counter-terrorism efforts will continue to be strengthened through intelligence sharing and rapid response units.
