Six Feared Dead, Eight Injured After Matatu Crashes Into Truck on Nakuru-Eldoret Highway

At least six people are feared dead and eight others injured after a matatu crashed into a stalled truck at Twin Bridge along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway early Saturday.

According to reports, the matatu was travelling from Nairobi towards Eldoret when it hit the rear of the truck at around 3 am.

Latest reports stated the injured passengers were taken to Londiani Hospital for medical attention.

The force of the collision left the matatu badly damaged, with images from the scene showing its windscreen and windows shattered and parts of the vehicle crushed.

Early reports suggested some of the people on board were heading home after a police graduation ceremony.

The accident follows a string of other fatal road crashes reported from around the country in recent months.

The crash only contributes to an even more troubling record at Twin Bridge, which had reported several severe accidents in 2024.

On 9th January 2024, a Classic Kings bus that was on its way to Lavington was involved in a head-on collision with a North Ways Shuttle matatu at the same place; 15 people lost their lives in this accident.

In August 2024, another crash involving multiple cars occurring over the Twin Bridge-Migaa section claimed the lives of 13 persons and left 55 others wounded.

Another collision involving a 14-seater PSV and a lorry was reported at Twin Bridge on September 14, 2024, leaving 11 people injured. Kenya Red Cross said no fatalities were recorded in that incident.

Constant accidents have made Twin Bridge a risky point on the Nakuru-Eldoret stretch of the corridor.

Government Road Safety Initiatives

In the wake of the January 2024 tragedy, Kuresoi North Sub-County Police Commander, Judah Gathenge, appealed to motorists to be cautious of the danger warning on this stretch of the highway, which is said to have numerous black spots.

The government also revealed wider initiatives to address the carnage on the roads.

Law Enforcement and Road Safety Response

President William Ruto, in his remarks during the event of launching the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028 in April 2024, said the government would clamp down on lawless motorists.

“Our justice, law and order agencies must coordinate and sustain robust law enforcement by ensuring that offenders are detected, apprehended, prosecuted and punished swiftly and transparently,” Ruto said.

The police are investigating the incident to determine the details of the accident.
