Emergency response teams have been deployed along the Voi-Taveta Highway in Taita Taveta County after a bush fire broke out in the area on the evening of Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Firefighters from the County Fire Brigade, personnel from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and first responders from the Kenya Red Cross Society are currently on the ground conducting joint containment operations to control the spreading flames and secure surrounding residential areas.

“Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Wildlife Service and the County fire brigade remain on the ground working to contain a bush fire along the Voi-Taveta Road and keep nearby residents safe,” Kenya Red Cross said.

Voi-Taveta Highway Fire Clarification

In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross said Initial reports from the scene had suggested a fuel tanker fire had occurred along the route.

However, ground verification teams quickly clarified that the outbreak is an active bush fire.

“Earlier reports described this as a tanker fire. Ground teams have since confirmed it is a bush fire. More updates to follow as the situation develops,” the Agency added.

By the time of publication, authorities had not yet established the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.

This follows a massive wildfire that raged through the moorlands and native bamboo zones of Mount Kenya, destroying or threatening an estimated 100,000 hectares of critical catchment vegetation.

Authorities suspect human activity—possibly wild honey harvesters or people clearing land—sparked the blaze.
