12 Youths Arrested After Attempting to Block Rachel Ruto’s Convoy

Twelve youths have been arrested in Siaya after allegedly attempting to block a convoy carrying First Lady Rachel Ruto shortly after a women’s economic empowerment event in the county.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, following the conclusion of the function held at the Siaya KMTC grounds.

“Law enforcement officers in Siaya have arrested 12 suspects following a chaotic incident in which a group of rowdy youth attempted to obstruct a convoy of dignitaries in Siaya town,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said.

Convoy of Rachel Ruto Targeted

According to the DCI, the youths attempted to force their way through a secured gate as Rachel Ruto’s convoy headed towards a designated landing and take-off site.

The group allegedly obstructed the convoy and hurled stones at police officers manning the entrance.

Police officers responded swiftly to the confrontation, restored order and arrested the 12 suspects believed to have participated in the incident.

Following the arrests, the suspects were placed in police custody as officers began processing them ahead of arraignment.

Detectives Pursue Other Suspects

Meanwhile, detectives are continuing their investigations to establish whether other people took part in the confrontation involving Rachel Ruto’s convoy.

Authorities are also pursuing any additional suspects identified during the ongoing inquiry, with the DCI saying investigations will continue until all those involved are brought to book.

“The DCI reiterates that while citizens have the right to assemble and express themselves peacefully, violence, obstruction of lawful operations and attacks on police officers will not be tolerated,” the agency said.

The warning comes as Rachel Ruto’s convoy incident remains under investigation, with police maintaining that peaceful assembly must not turn into violence or obstruction of lawful operations.

“Those who resort to disorder and violence will be held accountable in accordance with the law,” the DCI added.
