Suluhu Announces 90 Days Break From Office Days After Husband’s Death

The president of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu, has taken a 90-day break from office in order to mourn her late husband, Hafidh Ameir, who died days ago.

According to a statement on September 10, 2026, Chief Secretary Moses Kulisuka confirmed that while Samia is away, her duties will be handled by her vice president, Deogratius Ndejembi.

Her husband died on September 7 while he was receiving treatment for a heart disease; he was buried the same day as per Islamic customs.

The death was announced on September 7 by Tanzania’s Vice President, who said Hafidh Ameir died at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital at around 8 a.m.

Islam Customs

As a Muslim widow, President Samia is expected to observe iddah, the Islamic mourning period prescribed for widows in Islam customs.

Under Islamic teachings, iddah lasts four lunar months and ten days for a widow who is not pregnant.

During this period, widows traditionally observe mourning while refraining from remarriage, although religious guidance does not automatically prevent a public office holder from carrying out official responsibilities.

The Tanzanian government has continued to issue official communications through the presidency as the country mourns the loss of its First Gentleman.

Her Late Husband

Hafidh Ameir Hassan became Tanzania’s First Gentleman in March 2021 when Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed the presidency following the death of former President John Magufuli, becoming the country’s first female head of state.

Despite holding a historic role, he maintained a largely private life and was known for his work in agriculture and academia rather than politics.

Condolences have continued to pour in from across East Africa, with Kenyan President William Ruto describing the late Hafidh as President Samia’s lifelong companion, a beloved father to their children and a distinguished son of Tanzania.

Other regional leaders have also expressed solidarity with President Samia and the people of Tanzania during the period of mourning.
