The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has announced a month-long programme to commemorate the late former party leader Raila Amolo Odinga, one year after his death.

In a statement issued on Thursday, September 10, 2026, ODM said it will dedicate the entire month of October to honouring Raila and remembering his contribution to Kenya’s democracy and Pan-Africanism.

The party has named the programme “Mwezi wa Baba”, in reference to Raila’s popular title, Baba.

Raila Odinga’s Candle-Lighting Ceremony

ODM will kick off the commemorations on October 2 with a nationwide candle-lighting ceremony. The party has asked Kenyans to light candles at 6 pm, either individually or in organised groups, to remember Raila.

ODM described Raila’s death as a painful moment for the party and the country. “It was a tearful moment; we were all heartbroken. God plucked the best flower from our midst,” the party said.

Memorial Rally in Kakamega

On October 9, ODM will hold a major memorial rally in Kakamega Town. The event will bring together party supporters from counties across the Western Kenya region, including Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma and Trans Nzoia.

From October 10 to 15, the party said family-led activities will take place before culminating in the main memorial service at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo.
